Snooker is a game where you use a white ball and a cue to hit other balls into the pockets of a large table.
How did Snooker originate?
Snooker was invented at the end of the 19th century by British soldiers in India. Officer Neville Chamberlain created a new game by adding extra coloured balls to billiards. He gave the game the name ‘snooker’, which at the time was a teasing word for an inexperienced soldier. Later, the game spread around the world and is now a well-known sport with professional tournaments.
What is Snooker?
Snooker is a game you play on a large table with pockets. You use a long stick, called a ‘cue’, to hit a white ball. With that white ball, you try to hit other balls into the pockets. There are red balls and balls in different colours. First, you must hit a red ball into a pocket, then a coloured ball. You keep alternating like this. Each ball is worth a certain number of points. Players take turns doing this. Whoever has the most points at the end wins the game.
The scoring
Each ball in the game is worth a certain number of points. Red balls are worth 1 point. Coloured balls are worth 2 to 7 points. The black ball is worth the most, with 7 points. A player always tries to hit a red ball and then a coloured ball into a pocket. This way, the player collects as many points as possible. If a player misses or makes a mistake, it is the other player’s turn. At the end of the round, the player with the most points wins.
