International Union of Railways – Wikipedia

The UIC (French: Union Internationale des Chemins de fer) is an international association of railroad companies.

The association was founded in Paris on 17 October 1922 to improve the conditions for the construction and operation of railroads for international traffic through standardization.

This includes numbering systems for the identification of railroad wagons.
