01 What are BCD encodings?

BCD – for Binary Coded Decimal – stands for a method of encoding a decimal digit 0 – 9 with a binary number.

The most common or best known are 4-bit codes. In addition, 5-bit codes, 7-bit codes or even 10-bit codes are also used. These differ in the place value of the individual bits or in their intended use.
