RIPEMD – RACE Integrity Primitives Evaluation Message Digest was developed in 1992 in the context of the EU program RACE for the use of broadband communication.
RIPEMD generates hashes with 128-bit length.
Further developments followed in 1992, which are characterized by longer hashes in addition to improved security:
